KANGENTRAVELING.COM - Ponpok Pesantren Al-Hikmah 1 Benda has a rich historical background with its beginnings traceable back to 1911. The educational institution owes its existence to KH Kholil bin Mahalli, a religious scholar who, after completing his studies in different pesantrens and finishing his journey in Pesantren Mangkang Semarang, saw the need for religious education in the community.
The Early Stage
KH Kholil bin Mahalli established home-based religious study groups using a method he called "Bil Hikmah Wal Mauidhotil Hasanah," which emphasized the use of wisdom and good advice in spreading religious teachings. These groups laid the foundation for what later became the Pondok Pesantren Al Hikmah 1.
The First Official Opening
In 1927, the Pesantren formally opened its operations. It was led by KH Suhaimi bin Abdul Ghoni, a nephew of KH Kholil, who graduated from Mahad al Haram Makah, Saudi Arabia. He dedicated his life to enlightening the Benda community, which was then still primitive, and brought numerous advancements in areas including, but not limited to, economics, education, and religion.
Revolutionary Period & Post-Conflict Rejuvenation
During the Revolutionary era, the institution experienced immense turmoil. With the onset of war, many students and teachers joined the fight for independence. In the aftermath, KH Suhaimi and KH Kholil played a vital role in restructuring the school and restoring normal learning.
Expansion Period
After the death of the founding figures, a new generation took the reins of the pesantren -KH Shodiq Suhaemi and KH M Masruri Mughni, grandsons of KH Kholil- and brought about significant developments. The institution introduced various formal and informal training programs, including Madrasah Tamrinussibyan (currently Madrasah Ibtidaiyah), Tahfidzul Quran, and different skill-based trainings such as carpentry, welding, and journalism.
In 2012, the statistics showed that the Ponpok Pesantren Al-Hikmah 1 Benda had around 1,470 students, with 1,030 male and 440 female students.
The Hospitable Neighbourhood
Apart from its significant role in community education, the institution is also an active community member. They host regular religious gatherings that are open to all community members.
The journey and growth of the Ponpok Pesantren Al-Hikmah 1 Benda is a testament to the power of community and education. Its founders' legacy continues to thrive, illuminating the path for many in dire need of education, particularly religious teachings. The institution, no doubt, has contributed to the betterment of the Benda community and served as an integral part of the Indonesian education system. (*)
